19 October 2026
Over the weekend, Bullhorn experienced a major service outage following a reported cyber incident, leaving recruitment businesses unable to access key systems and services.
Bullhorn confirmed on 17 October that it had detected a cyber incident and temporarily disabled access to its platform while investigating. The company said it was working with cybersecurity specialists CrowdStrike to help resolve the situation.
For recruitment businesses that rely on Bullhorn to manage candidates, vacancies and applications, this has been a timely reminder of just how much we depend on our recruitment technology.
What does this mean for recruitment businesses?
The disruption affected more than just logging into Bullhorn. With access to the Bullhorn API also unavailable, connected services relying on that connection were affected too.
Depending on how your systems are configured, this can include:
- Job boards and websites: Job updates and synchronisation with your ATS may stop working.
- Candidate registrations and applications: Information submitted through connected websites may be unable to reach Bullhorn immediately.
- Data integrations: Automated transfers between Bullhorn and other platforms may be interrupted.
- Recruitment automation: Background scripts and processes that depend on Bullhorn may pause until access is restored.
For a recruitment agency, even a temporary interruption can mean delays for consultants, candidates and clients.
What happens to data submitted during an outage?
This depends on how each integration has been built.
Some integrations simply fail when the receiving system is unavailable. Others are designed to recognise the problem, temporarily retain the information and retry the request when the connection becomes available again.
For example, our Bullhorn-connected services include mechanisms to handle API interruptions, allowing supported processes to resume when access returns.
However, it’s important not to assume every integration works this way. If your website, job board or another system sends information directly to your ATS, it’s worth checking what happens when that connection fails.
A candidate might successfully complete an application on your website, for example, but that doesn’t automatically mean the application has reached your recruitment database.
Has data been compromised?
At the time of writing, the full details and impact of the cyber incident have not been publicly established.
We have checked our own servers and the systems we use to communicate with Bullhorn and have found no indication of malicious activity on our side. However, that doesn’t establish whether any data held within Bullhorn, or information subsequently transferred to connected services, has been affected.
If you use integrations that copy data between platforms, it’s sensible to check that information remains consistent once services are restored.
For the latest information, refer to Bullhorn’s official service status page.
Is your recruitment technology prepared for disruption?
No business can guarantee that every system will remain available all the time. What you can do is make sure your technology is built to cope with problems and that you know what to do when they occur.
A few things worth reviewing:
- Your website and job board: Can candidates still browse vacancies and understand what to do if applications cannot be processed?
- Your integrations: Do failed connections trigger retries, alerts or useful error logs?
- Your data: Are important records backed up, and can you identify whether information has failed to synchronise?
- Your processes: Do your team members know how to handle applications or enquiries that cannot reach your ATS?
- Your wider technology setup: Are there critical tasks that rely entirely on one system, with no practical alternative when it goes offline?
These aren’t just questions for IT teams. They affect how effectively your consultants can work and the experience your candidates and clients receive.
